Wellcome Trust Research
The Wellcome Trust Research Laboratory (WTRL), in the Division of Gastrointestinal Sciences at the Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, is a leading clinical and public health research laboratory applying innovative approaches with state of the art technology to understand and solve problems related to gastrointestinal infection and function. The WTRL has been conducting studies on the epidemiology of diarrheal diseases for over 50 years and has an established international reputation. We are unique in having a combination of very successful field teams, which conduct community based research, backed by a strong and rapidly growing molecular and immunology laboratory.
We work closely with the Departments of Medicine, Developmental Paediatrics, Infectious Diseases, Neonatology, Biochemistry, Child Health and Community Health to provide comprehensive services to patients with enteric infections and to facilitate research interests. Further support for research is provided by the Department of Biostatistics and the Clinical Epidemiology Unit. The WTRL's significant research contribution is reflected in our publication record, with more than 1000 publications in national and international journals.
Our international collaborators include Tufts University, Boston, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Imperial College, London, Stanford University, University of Virginia, University of Liverpool, and the World Health Organization. Our national collaborators are the National Institute of Epidemiology, Chennai, National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases, Kolkata, National Institute of Virology, Pune, National Institute of Immunology, Delhi, Society of Applied Studies, Delhi andthe Translational Health Science and Technology Institute, Faridabad.
We aim to build committed individuals and teams to conduct research that is relevant to India or to resource limited settings; we encourage enthusiastic researchers to work with us, and have strong collaborations in India and around the world.
